Professional and Personal Relationships

Two Parts - Professional and Personal

Adapting to the Professional World

- The first part of the relationship section of my capstone project is about professional relationships.

- For this section, I was able to tie in the material I learned in my special topics class I took fall of my senior year called Leadership and Strategic Communication.  The readings assigned in that class throughout the semester were from a book from the Harvard Business review called On Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman.

- When it comes to relationships in the professional world, it was so important to be a leader with qualities of emotional intelligence. These leaders who have Emotional Intelligence are self-aware, self-regulated, motivated, empathetic , and have social skills (Goleman, 2015, 2-3).

- The connection between Emotional Intelligence and Cultural Adaptation is spotting out cultural differences in the work place, and working on managing the differences within an organization, and working with other individuals from different cultures as well (Vlad & Stan, 2018, 406-407).

- Through this connection, I found that managers with empathy understand people's cultural differences, and better understand employees. Through having emotional intelligence, a person's culture is easily accepted, understood, and a manager can help the employee while handling a conflict style (Gunkel et. al., 2016, 569-570).

Navigating Personal Relationships

- Through college experiences, and course material I learned in my interpersonal communication class in my sophomore year, personal relationships have been a key role in helping me as an individual go through and survive cultural adaptation.

- In my relationships I have formed during my college years, I have met people who came from many different cultures. This pattern has made me realize that every person has their own beliefs, and opinions, since we all come from different cultures.

- In this section, I found that there is a connection between personal relationships and an idea called relationship mobility, which all ties back to what I have learned from interpersonal communication (Kito et. al., 2017, 116-117).

- The idea is that there are opportunities to have the freedom to end relationships. People from different cultures have a set way or belief when it comes to relationships building as well. Both of those ideas have been very relevant in my experiences with forming personal relationships in college.
